CLEP Exams & Other Exams for Credit

CLEP (College Level Examination Program)

CLEP exams allow students to earn college credit by examination. Students may earn semester hours in general education breadth areas and additional credits in course-specific subject areas. All CLEP hours are reported as "pass" credit and will not affect GPA. Website: www.collegeboard.com/clep.

For a complete listing of CLEP exams honored at USU, the required scores, and the amount of credit awarded for each, see USU's Advising and Transition website at: www.usu.edu/advising/credit/clep.cfm

CLEPs with no USU course equivalent are available (see the Advising and Transition website), but USU does not award credit for them, though they may be honored for credit at other universities. Contact us if you have questions about other specific exams.
  • Advanced Placement

Advanced Placement or "AP" exams are offered at many high schools. They are not administered at the college level (see CLEP page for information on how to earn credit-by-exam at a college or university test center ). For information on how many credits an AP exam will earn at USU, contact your USU advisor or the Admissions and Records office. For questions regarding additional copies of AP scores or sending scores to a college or university, please contact the Advanced Placement program directly at (609) 771-7300 or visit their website: www.collegeboard.com/ap.

    "Challenging" a Course

Challenging a course is different from taking a CLEP exam. It is not handled through the Testing Services office. In theory, any course offered at USU may be challenged. In practice, a student must first obtain permission from the department that offers the course in order to challenge. If permission is obtained, the student should contact the Registration office to obtain a form called "Record of Special Examination" (commonly referred to as the "Challenge Form"). Once this form has been obtained the student goes to the department and takes their "challenge" requirement. This may be an exam, a project, a paper, or whatever the department deems necessary for the student to show proficiency. If the student performs to the department's specifications, the department completes and signs their portion of the Record of Special Examination. The student then returns the form to the Cashier's Office and pays a fee to have the credit posted on his or her transcript. Please direct any questions regarding the "challenge" option to the Registration office.

    Foreign Languages

All foreign language testing at USU is handled through the Languages and Philosophy Department and not through Testing Services. Please contact Languages and Philosophy at (435) 797-1209 for details.
